According to Archbishop William Temple a hallmark of the Christian Church is that it particularly exists for the benefit of non-members. In that spirit we are invited to reflect upon the Church’s engagement with society.
Jesus proclaimed the reality and the coming into our midst of God’s Kingdom. He perfectly embodied its values. They are perhaps best summarized in ‘the Beatitudes’ (Matthew 5).
By word and deed Jesus testified to its nature and his parables of the kingdom’ provide poetic insights into this mystery. Acts of healing and other miracles also offer dazzling glimpses of the underlying reality. The vision is of a Kingdom already present but whose loving purposes are yet to be entirely fulfilled.
Fulfilment remains in God’s hands as God’s ultimate gift. In the meantime ...
