The Pastoral Care and Counselling Service

There are times when any one of us can feel down and unable to cope, time when we need help and support over and above that which friends and family can offer.

Confidentiality

The counselling offered through the service is by qualified and experienced counsellors. It has the backing of the Bishop but is completely independent. Information as to who uses the service and what help they receive is not available to the hierarchy of the diocese unless this is requested by the user. It is completely confidential and is within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Code of Ethics.

Cost

There is no charge for the service.

Use of the service can be made by contacting the Adviser in Pastoral Care and Counselling for Clergy and Spouses (see below)

An initial assessment will be arranged to discuss the problem and agree on an appropriate way of dealing with issues. After this contact can be made with a counsellor outside of this diocese if this is requested.

How long will counselling last?

Counselling usually happens at weekly intervals for about an hour. The initial arrangement will be for six or twelve sessions.

Missed appointments

It is important to let your counsellor know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend an appointment. Sessions cancelled at short notice will still be paid for by the diocese.

Taking care of yourself

Counselling takes energy and it is important to allow sufficient time for a safe return home. Keeping the diary free for an hour or so afterwards is also a good idea.

Other help offered

Sometimes it is not counselling which is needed but the opportunity to simply talk over a problem at a one off meeting. Some aspects of the clergy’s pastoral responsibility are in themselves stressful and it is often helpful to meet with someone who can help process feelings after the event.

Also when clergy are dealing pastorally with people who seem to be emotionally disturbed or unusually difficult it may be hard to work out what to do next. An Adviser may be able to offer suggestions.

Here to help……

Addressing problems while they still seem to be manageable will often avert a crisis later on.
