Changing times require fresh approaches to mission and being church and as part of their response St John’s, Great Horton we are launching a ‘School of Mission.’
This is more than just a talking shop. It’s an opportunity for Christians who are already committed to mission in their communities to take some time together to think, pray, discuss and be challenged and equipped for the task of sharing the Good News of Jesus.
This autumn, the School of Mission will focus on the core themes of Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch’s key book on mission and the church, ‘The Shaping of Things to Come.’
There will be two Saturday mornings together : on 17 October and 5 December running from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The venue is the Hope Centre, Walshaw Street, Bradford,
BD7 4AB – the base for St John’s. It’s right next to Tesco Great Horton where there’s plenty of parking.
On 17 October, they will be looking at what it means to be a ‘Missional and Incarnational Church’ – the first two key themes from the book. On 5 December, they will focus on ‘Spirituality and Leadership for Mission’, the third and fourth themes.
School of Mission operates on an organic model so there is no charge or registration for the programme! You will need to purchase your own copy of the book which is available online from www.amazon.co.uk or in bookstores. They are looking at ways to facilitate interaction and discussion between participants in addition to the Saturdays and if you are interested in that please email the address below. Refreshments will be provided and you may donate towards the cost if you wish.
This autumn’s programme is facilitated by Nick Jones and Rich Jones. Nick has spent a lifetime in cross-cultural mission in Northern Nigeria, Cambridge & East Anglia and, for the last six and a half years here in Bradford on the cusp of the inner city. A musician by background, Rich is the leader of the Joshua Project, a community youth project that works in Great & Little Horton and Lidget Green in Bradford and is partnered with three churches, including St John’s. Rich also leads Roots Community, St John’s third and largest congregation, which is pioneering fresh and innovative ways of doing church and mission relevant to the people of the local community. Alan Hirsch, who’s a leading global mission strategist, has kindly made materials available to support the programme.
St John's are running the programme in association with the Joshua Project and Prayer for Bradford and, of course, Bradford Diocese of which they're a part. (In the Diocese, there's an unfortunate clash with the 'Leading your church into growth' event on 17 October so participants in that are encouraged just to come on 5 December).
