Everyday Life In A War Zone

An exhibition of photographs, showing everyday life in Herat, Afghanistan, opens next month in the Cathedral.

The photographs show scenes of almost normal life - shopping, school, work, play, weddings and celebrations - interspersed with scenes showing the results of conflict and violence.

Woman photojournalist Farahnaz worked in Herat until 2007 when she was forced to flee the country with only the youngest of her four children. After a year's arduous journey she arrived in Britain in July 2008 and asked for asylum. She was living in Bradford and Wakefield, awaiting the Home Office decision, until early October 2009 when she was suddenly taken into detention with her 9yr old son and deported to Hungary. The woman's perspective gives them a special impact. Farahnaz worked for the European Pressphoto Agency (epa) which has kindly donated use of their images for this exhibition.

An evening celebrating the culture of Afghanistan has been arranged for Friday 13 November with music, poetry and food. Both events are free but donations are appreciated which will be split between Afghanaid, BIASAN and the Cathedral's Artspace project to bring more exhibitions, drama, poetry and music into this wonderful building,

The exhibition runs from 3-19 November during the Cathedral's normal opening times of Monday to Saturday from 9am until 4.30pm but please call first - 01274 777720 - if making a special journey as other events or services might restrict your viewing.
