Mailing Lists

The Diocesan mailing lists are an important part of the communication system, helping people to stay in touch with what is happening around the Diocese. You can access the control area for all of the lists by visiting http://lists.bradford.anglican.org

Maintenance of your subscription is your concern. The part-time webkeeper does not have the time and resources to make the changes that you can manage for yourself. The links below may help you to access particular features, but the link above shows all the lists and allows all user configurations.

To alter your settings, open the appropriate page and fill in your registered address in the very bottom box on the page. You will need your password. If you don't know your password, there is an option to have this mailed to you.

For a description of some of the things you can change, see the bottom of this page

There are three main groups of lists, each designed for a particular purpose:

The "Announce" lists

The Announce List is the main public channel for all general information. Membership of the list is freely available to all interested people and it carries news and press releases.

There is a very restricted group of people who can send information on the list - so there will be no "chatter".

Expect two or three mails in a normal week.

Subscribe to the Announce List

Who should subscribe? Everyone in the Diocese with an email facility.

To unsubscribe from Announce-list, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address:

If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address

The Mailing will normally receive one mail a month, containing details of all the material that is made available in what used to be called "The Clergy Mailing".

The Diocesan Office could send a normal email to the list, but is unlikely so to do.

Expect one mail per month.

Subscribe to the "Mailing" List

Note that, as this is a private list, your subscription request will be held for approval. Requests near the end of the month may miss that month's despatch.

Who should subscribe? Clergy and lay parish officials.

To unsubscribe from the Mailing list, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address:

If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address

Discussion Lists

Off the Record is the place to go if you want to take part in discussions. This is a list to which all members can contribute and it gives the opportunity for an online community to develop. On "off the Record" you will hear a wide spectrum of news and views, though not all of the discussion will be directly relevant to everyone.

Subscribe to Off the Record

Who should subscribe? Those who wish to join in the "electronic community" of Bradford Diocese

To unsubscribe from Off-the-Record, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address:

If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address

Special interest lists. There is a variety of lists available, each with a particular focus. Examples are the "YaC" list (Youth and Children) or the World Church Links list. Some (like YaC) have a restricted membership - to join, you can apply to sign up but will need to wait for confirmation. Others are open to all. Each list develops its own culture and community - and the amount of traffic on each list will vary widely.

Who should subscribe? Those who have an interest in a particular topic

Committee Lists

Several committees or groups now use a mailing list to keep in touch and to deliver minutes and agendas. Many work much like an "announcement" list, with the secretary being the main poster. Others use the facility to hold online discussions.

Any group or committee may set up a list to facilitate internal discussion, though there needs to be facility to avoid disenfranchising those with no access to email and a reasonable certainty that any important documents are safely delivered.

Membership of these groups is normally strictly limited to those authorised by the group leader and new members will be invited to join. These lists may well not be displayed on the information page

Who should subscribe? Members of a committee or those authorised

To sign up to any of these lists, please visit the "Mailman" page at http://lists.bradford.anglican.org or ask the secretary of your group to add you.

Please note: there is NO "www" in this address

Administering your subscriptions

Looking after your subscription(s) to the lists is relatively simple. This is your responsibility and help from the webkeeper is restricted to helping those who have tried and are stuck!

Follow this link to the Mailman administration page and select the list that you want to alter. Go right to the bottom of that page and fill in your email address (the one that is subscribed) and then click on the "Unsubsribe or edit options" button. There is a direct link to the Announce and Off-the-Record lists from the boxes above.

You'll need to log in with your password. If you don't know it, you'll find an option to have this emailed to you. Make a note of it!

You will now see a page with lots of options. Most of them are fairly self-evident. You'll spot a number of boxes marked "Set Globally". If you check these, it will make the same change for all of your subscriptions. Thus, if you are off on your holidays, you can set the "No Mail" option on just one of your lists and ask it to change all the others for you at the same time.

When you return, simply repeat the process in reverse!

The more significant items on this page:

Change Address:
If you change your email address, please alter this! If you do not change your registered address, messages will be sent to your old one till they start to fail ("bounce"). The system will then cast you out. You can always subscribe again with the new address.

Your name:
This really helps me to look after the lists, though I am not sure where else it appears. Feel free to fill it in!

Mail Delivery
When you go away for a while, it is simpler to ask for "No Mail" than to unsubscribe entirely from the list. Resubscribe when you return. Another useful trick, if you wish to send messages from two different addresses is to subscribe them both, but disable delivery to one of them. That way, you will just get one copy of the messages.

Digest Mode
The Bradford mailing lists are not very high-volume, so this option is not likely to make a great difference to your life. I suggest that you turn this off! On some lists, the option is disabled anyway.
