Sudan Link Committee

What we do

A working group meets monthly, to manage the link and liaison with Lambeth Palace and other partners.

  • Exchange visits. Each year we arrange for a couple of people from Bradford to visit Sudan and a couple of people from Sudan to visit Bradford.  We also try to attend significant events in the life of the Episcopal Church of Sudan.

  • Resource news and prayer needs for parishes involved with Sudan. Some parishes have links with particular schools and help fund teachers.

  • Collect funds, helping the Sudanese church accomplish what it tells us are its projects and priorities.  Parish giving for Sudan General Fund is about £6,000 a year.  All money given by parishes goes to Sudan, as other expenses are paid for from our own Diocesan funds.

  • Regularly support the Shokai Bible Training Institute in Khartoum (£3,000 a year) which teaches Theology to Ordinands and Readers.

  • The Committee manages two designated funds for work in Sudan – Nuba Scholarship Fund and the T M Wright Bequest.

Plans for the Future

  • Assist the Episcopal Church in Sudan in whatever way possible, by keeping in close touch with them, passing on news, maintaining a prayer focus, arranging visits, gathering funding, and encouraging learning from our partnership experiences.

  • Work with parishes in Bradford Diocese to enable them to engage fully with our Diocesan link, giving and receiving benefit.

  • Raise the profile of the link in our Diocese, including celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2013 in a way that claims and informs our Diocesan prayer life, towards deepening our understanding of our faith.

  • Develop support for the Episcopal Church in Sudan by working with other agencies and church leaders in Sudan, and liaising with other agencies supporting the church in Sudan including Lambeth, Diocese of Salisbury, Sudan Church Association, Christian Aid, TEAR Fund and the Bible Society.

  • Build the next generation of people in Bradford who will carry forward the link.
